Keeping the heat

The Winnipeg Uniflyte buildings take advantage of the KeepTheHeat Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger system.

The KeepTheHeat system (formerly known as Neu-Air) is made by Environmental Air Solutions, Inc. and uses outgoing lower-quality, warm air as a heat source for incoming fresh, cool air. The system has a low maintenance costs due to the system having only two motors with sealed bearings. Filters are not required in such a system.

Replacing the lower-quality air with fresh air allows for a cleaner, healthier workplace. Odours, humidity and particulates are removed, which helps prevents aging and contamination of equipment.

A major advantage is heating the incoming air with outgoing air. This allows money already spent on heating costs to be re-used on heating the fresh air instead of simply ventilating the warm air out.

This may sound like a complicated device, but it's quite simple. The incoming air is drawn into the building by a fan and routed through a series of pipes. The incoming air fan is sealed off in a way that only the pipes have access to it. The outgoing air flows to the outside over these pipes, never touching the fresh air before being blown outside via a different fan unit.

Uniflyte has been using three units at 2150 Logan since March of 2009 with great results. An additional two units are currently being installed at 2078 Logan and should be ready for the upcoming winter.
